Why does cork make us happy?

The majority of cork oaks are located in Portugal (51%) and Spain (26%). The 60 million cork oaks (2,200,000 hectares of cork forest) reduce annual CO2 emissions by 5%, over 4.8 million tons per year. In this way, the cork forests actively contribute to limiting global warming.

The extensive cork forests (‘montado’s’) are indispensable for our planet. Cork forests form a unique ecosystem in the world. They act as a natural barrier against advancing desertification and are a safe haven for unique and endangered animal species.

Cork is made from the bark of the cork oak. The tree is stripped every 9 years. To harvest cork, the tree is not cut down. A stripped cork oak lives longer (approximately 200 years vs 80 years) and absorbs 3-5 times more CO2 than cork oaks that are not harvested.

Cork city as an innovative and sustainable source generates no waste. The bark can be fully utilized: not only for walls, floors, packaging, cork stoppers but also for unconventional applications such as in aerospace, fashion, and musical instruments.
