Microplastics have been in the news a lot lately. At Happy Earth, we understand that you might be worried about this. That is why all our products are 100% microplastic-free and carry the Zero Plastic Inside label! Here we have listed some facts about microplastic.
What are microplastics?
Microplastics are very small pieces of plastic. These particles are not biodegradable but break down into increasingly smaller pieces. Unfortunately, they often end up in the environment and are difficult to clean up. Microplastic, often called microbeads, is found in the sea, the earth, and even in the air. So it's no surprise that it also ends up in our food and cosmetics.
Are microplastics harmful?
There is still much uncertainty about the harmfulness of microplastics. However, several long-term dangers have already been identified. Plastic contains quite a few harmful substances such as plasticizers and stabilizers. These substances can disrupt your hormonal balance. In addition, it can also have an adverse effect on the immune system. But the exact impact on our health is still being researched*.
Where are microplastics found?
Did you know that as many as 90% (!) of cosmetic products contain microplastics? Studies** found microplastic in, among others, make-up, shower gel, deodorant, face cream, hand soap, shampoo, toothpaste, and sunscreen. Microplastics are often deliberately added to cosmetics because they provide a softening effect on the skin**. While this is not necessary at all and there are plenty of natural alternatives!
