Microplastics have been in the news a lot lately. At Happy Earth we understand that you may be concerned about this. That is why all our products are 100% microplastic-free and have the Zero Plastic Inside quality mark! Here we have listed a number of facts about microplastic.
What are Microplastics?
Microplastics are very small pieces of plastic. These particles are not degradable, but break down into smaller and smaller pieces. Unfortunately, they often end up in the environment and are difficult to clean up. Microplastic, also often referred to as microbeads, occurs in the sea, the earth and even in the air. It is therefore not surprising that it also ends up in our food and cosmetics.
Are microplastics harmful?
Much is still unclear about the harmfulness of microplastics. However, a number of long-term dangers have already been identified. There are quite a few harmful substances in plastic such as plasticizers and stabilizers. These substances can disrupt your endocrine system. In addition, it can also have a detrimental effect on the immune system. But the exact impact on our health is still being investigated*.
What products contain microplastics?
Did you know that no less than 90% (!) of cosmetics products contain microplastics? In studies**, microplastic was found in make-up, shower gel, deodorant, face cream, hand soap, shampoo, toothpaste and sunscreen. Microplastics are often deliberately added to cosmetics, because they provide a softening skin**. While this is not necessary at all and there are plenty of natural alternatives!
