Heat rash: tips for prevention & treatment
Heat rash is also known as heat allergy or sweat rash. It occurs when someone is very warm and has difficulty dissipating that heat. The rash can occur at any age, including in children or even babies. The result is irritation and a rash in the form of bumps. Often, the rash appears in places where you would rather not have it, such as in the groin, armpits, or neck. Because babies have underdeveloped sweat glands, this occurs more frequently in them. To help young parents prevent or treat heat rash, we have compiled a number of tips.
Tips against heat rash
- Dress your little one lightly, 1 layer is more than enough.
- Keep your child out of the sun as much as possible.
- "If they are going to be in the sun: make sure to apply sunscreen on your child properly."
- Put your child in a lukewarm bath with just water after a warm day, or use a soap-free wash gel. This does not irritate the skin.
- "Preferably do not apply greasy cream, as this can worsen heat bumps. However, you can use cream based on zinc oxide (Diaper cream for example), as it cools and heals. This works great against heat rash / heat allergy."
