Why does cork make us happy?

The majority of cork oaks are located in Portugal (51%) and Spain (26%). The 60 million cork oak trees (2,200,000 hectares of cork forest) reduce annual CO2 emissions by 5%, more than 4.8 million tons per year. In this way, the cork forests actively contribute to limiting global warming.

The vast cork forests ('montado's') are indispensable for our planet. Cork forests form a world unique ecosystem. They form a natural dam against the advancing desertification and they are a safe haven for unique and endangered species.

Cork is made from the bark of the cork oak. The tree is peeled every 9 years. In order to extract cork, the tree is not cut down. A peeled cork oak lives longer (+/-200 years vs 80 years) and absorbs 3-5 times more CO2 than unharvested cork oaks.

As an innovative and sustainable source, cork has no waste. The bark can be used completely:not only for walls, floors, packaging, cork stoppers, but also for non-everyday applications such as in aerospace, fashion, and musical instruments.
