What is diaper rash?

Wearing a diaper can cause the already so sensitive baby skin, get irritated easily. This is called diaper rash. You can recognize diaper rash by red skin around the diaper area. The skin feels dry and looks flaky. Sometimes bumps appear between and on the buttocks, red spots, blisters or even wounds. This is caused by a combination of several factors. Firstly, of course, because the skin is in contact with urine and feces for a longer period of time, which contain corrosive substances. In addition, it is warm and moist in the diaper, which makes the skin soft. The friction of the diaper then abrades the skin.

How can you treat diaper rash?

Fortunately, there are several ways to treat diaper rash. It is important to check at what stage the results are. Do you only see some red bumps on and between the buttocks or have wounds already developed? In the latter case, more intensive care is required. We will explain how to do this below.

Tip 1: keep your baby's bottom clean

Maybe obvious, but no less important to mention: keep your baby's bottom clean! Change even more regularly than normal and preferably use moisture-absorbing diapers. Do you use cloth diapers? Then rinse it after washing with water and vinegar (1 tablespoon of vinegar per liter of water). This will remove any soap residue. The irritation makes your child extra sensitive to chemicals in detergent or care products. For your own hygiene, you might also prefer to use natural hand soap, before changing your baby.

Tip 2: use perfume-free wipes

Treatment of diaper rash requires proper cleaning. But not too good! Scrubbing hard only makes the irritation worse. In addition, it is important not to use corrosive products. Many baby wipes have a wonderful scent, but do contain perfume and chemicals. This can worsen or sometimes even cause the rash. So better opt for wipes without perfume and with as few ingredients as possible – such as WaterWipes – to prevent diaper rash.

Tip 3: let the buttocks dry thoroughly

Make sure the skin around the diaper area is completely dry before putting on a new diaper. Another way to treat diaper rash is to simply let your baby lie without a diaper for a while. For example, have you just given your baby a bath (with soap-free bath gel)? Then let him or her dry after drying
